(With Prof D McAdams)
Main points
- People make stories about themselves
- Stories can modified
- Stories are socially modified, some introspection but mostly social, friends, community etc
- People can influence (especially in positions of power), positive and negative
- Process is life long
- People make decisions based on these stories
- Four research points; empowered central characters (with agency) associated with well-being vs passive characters: communication is good (central characters connected to others, friends etc): redemption, overcoming suffering are good: coherent, easier to follow stories are associated with well-being.
- Stories are humans dealing with their intentions over time
- Lost and confused we can reshape stories
I suspect that Kim Hill would have been a better interviewer and asked more stringent questions.
